Overview of WordPress

WordPress is a free Web-based software program for building and running websites and blogs. WordPress, first available in 2003, was first meant for bloggers but over the years has grown exponentially and now a big chunk of websites, not just blogs, are run on the software.  WordPress holds to a philosophy of  "open source" community which results in new innovations and greater capabilities.

WordPress is a great "content management system" (CMS), able to run a huge variety of websites and very userfriendly. WordPress designs come in different "Themes."  It is very easy to customise the Themes by using Photoshop, an Acrobat PDF, InDesign PDF, etc. Many users choose to barely make any changes to a chosen Theme, often changing just the colour or the lay-out. This speaks to the quality of the Themes available.

Using WordPress, a person can create and edit new content for their website just by using a web browser and an internet connection. There is no difficult software language to master such as HTML. The editing interface allows for the administrator to give others access to website content at varying levels, which is an ideal platform for outside contribution. Updating a website or blog frequently is easy to do and ensures greater exposure in search engines. Search engine optimization and social media come as part of the package and require almost no effort to maintain. One of the most popular features of WordPress is its database of plug-ins, offering cutom function and features, meaning a website can be adapted to an administrator's needs.
